Weekly Report #5 The Significance of Writing in the AI Era

I want to buy osmanthus flowers and bring wine, but it's not the same as when I was young and traveling.

I'm sorry for missing the weekly report and monthly summary. Last week, I was adjusting my mental state and had a disorganized schedule, so I couldn't muster the desire to share. 😭 But this week, I averaged 7 hours and 36 minutes of sleep, and I'm back on track!

First Experience with Midjourney#

This year can be considered the year of AI. With the explosion of ChatGPT, various AI applications have emerged. Many products are great, but there are still many problems when using them extensively. They are still at the toy level. The most productive one is Midjourney. As an outsider, it seems that you don't even need to find a designer to create an app. This is an avatar generated by AI using my own picture, and the effect is really good.

Gathering with Classmates#

On Wednesday, I had a rare gathering with old classmates. This was the first time so many people got together since graduation. We talked about our current situations and other classmates... After returning home that night, I felt a bit melancholic for no reason. The next day, I kept thinking about their words. Maybe as I grow older, I tend to be nostalgic, and perhaps I found my past self in those people. Memories and reality intertwine, leaving a particularly painful mark.

Now I'm twenty-four years old, but I have already forgotten the passion and dreams I had when I first entered university. I feel very sad and regretful about this. My thoughts have always changed over time, but I haven't been able to record my past self.

The Significance of Writing#

I missed the weekly report and monthly summary last week, so I thought I should write something this week. When I was struggling with the theme for this week, this gathering with classmates gave me an idea - the significance of writing. The current weekly report has actually deviated from my original intention. I originally wanted to record some new technologies or interesting tools I came across each week, similar to the Frontend Weekly. However, after seeing the life journal-style weekly report shared by pseudoyu, I changed it to its current form.

At first, I wrote more cautiously and didn't write down all my thoughts. Now I write whatever comes to mind. I don't have much writing skills, and my articles don't have a structure. It's even more casual now. Just for fun!

Completing a weekly report feels like redeeming myself. Although I reveal less about my state of mind in the text, I do feel much more relieved after writing it. I think this is one of the significances of writing. When I want to complete an article, countless thoughts have already flashed through my mind. These thoughts are usually not deliberately remembered and won't be noticed until negative emotions accumulate. Writing can help me solve many of these hidden emotional problems.

The second significance is digital backup. Since the rise of ChatGPT, I have been thinking about whether I can use my own data to create a digital clone of myself. The idea is a bit naive. Even if medical science cannot achieve physical immortality within our limited lifespan, my digital backup can still exist forever.

This idea originally came from Copilot Hub. By feeding AI with Wang Xiaobo's texts and having a conversation with it, it feels like having a conversation with Wang Xiaobo himself.

However, the idea of training my own digital self was shattered by an article this week on the road of AI, which made me feel disappointed. I was also discouraged from training my own data.

In the past, when I was obsessed with digital technology, I saw Zhong Wenzhe talk about how well he organized the photo gallery for reviewing and evaluating smartphones in a program. It could showcase the photos taken by users in a certain form. At that time, I sneered at this feature and thought it was nothing special. But now, I think it's worth reminiscing about the past from time to time.

Just like what Zhu Xuan said in vulgar language:

My thoughts change as my genitals develop.

People are complex individuals, and it is this complexity that gives them nobility, tolerance, compassion, selfishness, jealousy, resentment... Past experiences may help people grow and undergo many changes. I really want to record all of these.

At the beginning of the year, I received a letter from To Future, which was written by myself three years ago and sent to me in the present. Because I felt guilty about my past expectations, I deliberately forgot the contents of the letter and don't remember them anymore. But when I received this letter from the past, my first reaction was the difference and the realization that time has such great magic. In the cramming teaching of my reading career, I never felt the insight into history mentioned in an answer to a reading comprehension question. But from this letter, I realized the weight of history.

The young man who once held a sword in my heart is now mingling among the common people.

I think this is the third significance, to record my life. It doesn't matter for self-redemption or digital backup. It's just to have a medium that stores my past self, so that I can look up my thoughts at a certain moment. It can be in the form of words, pictures, or videos. Just recording for the sake of recording, hoping that the heart of the youth never dies.

I want to buy osmanthus flowers and bring wine, but it's not the same as when I was young and traveling!
